A brand new addition to Africa Health 2016, the 1st South African Preventive Medicine Conference will be taking place on the 10th June. In association with the South African Public Health Medicine Association (SAPHMA) we will be hosting this forward looking one day program which will focus specifically on preventive health of individuals, communities, and defined populations.

Welcome message from the OC Chair

Dear Delegate,

The National Health Insurance Policy Paper (2015) puts emphasis on the PREVENTION of diseases and the promotion of health. Preventive Medicine focuses on the health of individuals, communities, and the defined population. Its goal is to protect, promote, and maintain health and well-being and to prevent disease, disability, and death.

Preventive Medicine aims to improve the health of individuals and populations through:

1. Translational research,

2. Education and training,

3. Community outreach and

4. Promotion of Public Health.

NHI will ensure that everyone has access to a comprehensive package of healthcare services.

The package of services will be provided through appropriately accredited and contracted public and private providers and there will be a strong and sustained focus on the provision of health promotion and preventive services at the community and household level.

This inaugural conference on Preventive Medicine will focus on Preventive Medicine in the context of NHI in South Africa. Dr Guerra, a Preventive Medicine Specialist from Italy will deliver the keynote address followed by a panel discussion on the ROLE OF CLINICAL PREVENTIVE MEDICINE IN SOUTH AFRICA. This will be followed by PREVENTIVE MEDICINE in the context of PRIORITY DISEASES in diseases in South Africa. Lastly, SAPHMA will have its organization meeting.
